PRESS RELEASE
Global Communication Semiconductors, Inc. selects
AWR’s Microwave OfficeTM as Next Generation MMIC Design
Tool
El Segundo, CA. - September 15, 2000 - Applied
Wave Research, Inc. (AWR) announced that it has signed a comprehensive
agreement with Global Communication Semiconductors, Inc. (GCS) to
provide electronic design automation (EDA) solutions to be used
on a worldwide basis for the design of microwave integrated circuits.
GSC is a leading provider of heterojunction bipolar transistors
(HBT),
pseudomorphic high electron mobility
transistors (PHEMT),
Epitaxial Wafers, surface acoustic wave (SAW) and optoelectronic
devices.
GCS,
a pure play GaAs IC foundry, based in Torrance, California will
be using AWRs Microwave OfficeTM software
and recommending it as the preferred design solution to customers
on a worldwide basis. GCS is currently in a major expansion
program to increase the fab facility from 10,000 sq ft to 21,000
sq ft by the end of 2000. The standardization on Microwave Office
will help GCS facilitate this expansion by increasing the efficiency
of the MMIC design,
layout and verification process. By the first quarter of
2001, GCS will increase the number of 4-inch wafer starts per week
from the current 500 to 2,000 4-inch equivalents.
Dr.
Owen Wu, CEO/President of GCS, stated GCSs selection
of Microwave Office demonstrates our commitment to leveraging new technology
as a means to providing competitive advantage in the market for
Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuits (MMICs). AWRs next-
generation technology will enable GCS to deliver a complete MMIC
solution, which is critical to our future expansion. GCS
employs many leading engineers with strong backgrounds in semiconductor
materials, processes and devices. Collectively, our key technologists
have more than 250 years of experience in GaAs PHEMT and HBT technologies
and III-V optoelectronics such as detectors, lasers and LED's.
Wing Yau, Director
Foundry Service & Applications, stated Helping our foundry
customers to achieve first pass success and time-to-market is one
our major goals in achieving customer satisfaction. By teaming with
AWR, our layout rules and device libraries are readily available
for easy access, allowing our customers to minimize design iteration
and reducing product development cycle time.
Ted
Miracco, Chief Executive Officer for AWR, added "The selection
of Microwave Office as the standard design
tool at GCS demonstrates the importance of integrated foundry libraries
for leading-edge semiconductor manufacturers like GCS and the strengths
of AWRs MMIC Design solution." AWR and GCS will be cooperatively
developing the integrated libraries necessary for MMICs to be designed,
layout and verified against foundry design rules.
Applied Wave Research, Inc.
(AWR), founded in 1994, provides integrated EDA solutions for the
design of high frequency communications, defence electronics and
high-speed computing and networking. AWR customers include leading
electronics companies involved in the development of wireless applications
